Food Stamps Payment Increase: Capitol Hill lawmakers are debating how to renew the Farm Bill as SNAP benefits are at the forefront of their discussion.

There has been significant controversy surrounding a proposal to halt food stamp increases for the next five years.

In spite of bipartisan agreement on some issues, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) remains a sticking point in the Farm Bill.

Democrats and Republicans support increased funding for USDA conservation programs, the Good Neighbor Authority anti-wildfire initiative, and expanding rural broadband.

In addition, they agree to expand crop insurance subsidies and to make SNAP benefits available to drug-related felony convicts.

In contrast, the Republican-controlled House proposes freezing SNAP payments at current levels, allowing only annual inflation adjustments. This proposal passed last week by the House Agriculture Committee.

In contrast, the Democrat-led Senate wants to continue adjusting SNAP payments over time, ensuring beneficiaries receive annual increases.

In the midst of high need, Democrats have criticized the Republican proposal, calling it the largest cut to SNAP in 30 years. Republicans argue that freezing SNAP payments does not constitute a cut.

Which states will receive payments?

In several states, SNAP recipients with school-age children will receive additional payments through the new SUN Bucks program.
