In a rare, miraculous surgery, a cancerous tumor weighing about 8 – 10 kgs was removed from the body of a 51-year-old woman through minimal invasive surgery by using advanced Technology by an expert team of surgeons at VPS Rockland hospital in New Delhi.

The patient was brought to the hospital with abrupt pain and bloating in the abdomen. When advanced CT scan was done, the imaging showed a large oval shaped mass near the small intestine. Then a minimal invasive surgery was conducted by Dr. Vinay Kumar Shaw, minimal access, Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon, to remove the tumor. Following the surgery, the patient was able to walk the same day and discharged after two days.

Actually, the patient was suffering from an extremely rare abnormal growth of tissue called Extra-intestinal Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumour (E GIST). Usually, GIST arises from the wall of the intestinal tract but in less frequently like this may arise outside the intestinal tract as well when they are called extraintestinal. Laparoscopic excision of such tumors is seldom.

Such bulky tumors are usually removed by open surgery. However, CT scan did not demonstrate the origin of the tumor so the laparoscopic dissection was performed. These tumors act like cancer and should be removed timely to keep away from other major problems.
