Former Karnataka chief minister Dharam Singh dies

Former chief minister of Karnataka, Dharam Singh passed away on Thursday. Dharam Singh was the 17th chief minister of Karnataka, a state in southern India, from 2004 to 2006. The veteran Congress leader died due to cardiac failure at about 9 am at a private hospital in Bengaluru. He was 80.

Singh was undergoing treatment for heart ailments at M S Ramaiah Memorial Hospital at Sanjaynagar in Bengaluru.

Singh began his innings in politics as an independent corporator. He fought the municipal elections against his own brother. He joined Congress in the late 1960s. He remained a loyalist and became the first choice for CM post in 2004. Before becoming CM, Singh had served as a minister under several chief ministers including Devraj Urs, Gundu Rao, Bangarappa, Veerappa Moily and SM Krishna.

Singh had handled portfolios like Home, PWD, Excise, Social Welfare etc.
