A group of doctors and community leaders who wanted to build a new hospital established the Dakota Medical Foundation in the 1960s. Early in the twenty-first century, charitable organizations were established within the foundation. The Dakota Medical Foundation established the Impact Foundation in 2005. Creating this foundation was intended to facilitate the financing of enterprises and the provision of charitable loans.
The Dakota Medical Foundation and Impact Foundation established Giving Hearts Day in 2008 as a flagship event to inspire people to donate and give as much as they can. Within twenty-four hours, both foundations mobilized and secured over $450,000 from local nonprofits. Subsequently, the annual Giving Hearts Day has been observed on the second Thursday of February, encouraging individuals to make substantial monetary contributions to charitable organizations to improve the lives of millions.
