The History of Global Family Day
Global Family Day, or International Peace Day, promotes international harmony and unity annually. It also promotes the idea that we are all family in a global village regardless of citizenship, boundaries, or color.
In 1997, the UN General Assembly inaugurated the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World on the first day of the millennium. This was promoted in the U.S. by Linda Grover and books like “One Day in Peace, January 1, 2000.”. This book imagines a world without war.
This was just the start of a new peaceful world, and in 1999, all U.N. member states were invited to dedicate the first day of the year to peacebuilding methods. The U.N. designated Global Family Day an annual event in 2001 after seeing its positive impact.
