GM rear wheel lock-u: General Motors is back in the news, and if you drive a Chevy, GMC, or Cadillac, you should check if your vehicle is part of a recent recall.
Following a September recall of about 450,000 pickups and SUVs due to a faulty low brake fluid warning light, nearly 462,000 more vehicles are being recalled for a rear-wheel lock-up risk.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that a faulty transmission valve in certain GM models is causing the problem. This recall affects popular diesel-engine models from Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, spanning several model years. Specifically, it targets Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from 2020 to 2022, as well as 2021 Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs. The transmission valve can wear out over time, leading to rough shifting and potentially causing the rear wheels to lock up. GM is working on a software fix to resolve the issue.

How will GM resolve the issue? Will it cost me money?
GM intends to install updated software for the transmission control module that will monitor the wear level of the valve. Before any possible lock-up, the program is intended to identify wear about 10,000 miles in advance.

The transmission will restrict itself to fifth gear if wear is detected, avoiding wheel lock-up and causing a “service engine” light and a reduced power warning. For gearboxes that the software detects as having a defective valve, GM has developed a special program, and the dealer will install this upgrade at no cost.
If you drive any of the models mentioned above, it’s absolutely worth verifying your personal recall status. Don’t be afraid to contact your dealer.
