Gorilla Suit Day History
Carlos Cruz Gemora, a Hollywood cosmetics artist, created the initial costume in the 1920s. His knowledge of makeup applied to actual gorillas from the San Diego Zoo contributed to the suit’s authenticity.
Unfortunately, film adaptations of gorilla suits existed before Gemora’s, and they were not nearly as accurate as the actual thing. As a consequence, the initial gorilla costumes were somewhat dubious depictions of the actual creature.
At the time of the release of Gemora’s realistic suit, both the film industry and gorillas were extremely prominent. This persisted for several decades until the 1950s, at which point their level of fear diminished.
A novel development emerged: special effects. It completely turned the film industry on its head. It was no longer necessary for humans to wear costumes; computers could handle everything. Certain ardent admirers of the past, including Rick Baker, were instrumental in preserving the gorilla attire. Baker avoided special effects and illusions in favor of appearing in films such as “Schlock” and “The Thing With Two Heads” while wearing a gorilla disguise.
In 1963, “MAD” magazine’s “Maddest Artists” Don Martin wrote a 56-page cartoon that mocked the Gorilla Suit holiday. Gorillas and gorilla costumed people attack this figure in “MAD” magazine’s wildly humorous way.
