Pune Metro Line 4 & 4A: The Pune Metro project took a big step forward after the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved two more metro lines for the city. The decision came on Wednesday and it adds fresh energy to Pune’s growing public transport system.
The government cleared Line 4, which will run from Kharadi to Khadakwasla through Hadapsar and Swargate, and Line 4A, which will run from Nal Stop to Warje and Manik Baug. These new lines are part of Phase 2 and follow earlier approvals for Line 2A and Line 2B.

New Route With 28 Stations
Line 4 and Line 4A together will stretch 31.636 km and will include 28 stations, all built as elevated stops. A government release said these two lines will link many important parts of the city, including IT parks, business areas, colleges, schools, and many busy residential zones in East, South, and West Pune.
The project will take five years to finish and will cost about Rs 9,857.85 crore. The Central government, the Maharashtra government, and outside funding agencies will share this cost. The release also said that these new corridors will become an important part of Pune’s bigger travel plan, called the Comprehensive Mobility Plan. They will link directly to already working or already approved metro lines at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop on Line 2, and at Swargate on Line 1, reported ET Now.
The release added, “They will also provide an interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station and connect with future corridors towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, ensuring smooth multimodal connectivity across metro, rail, and bus networks.”
The new lines will cover many well-known roads like Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. This will help reduce traffic on some of Pune’s most crowded stretches. It will also make travel safer and support cleaner transport for the future.
Expected Growth in Ridership
The government also shared details about how many people are expected to use these new lines in the future. According to the projections, about 4.09 lakh people will use Line 4 and Line 4A daily in 2028. This number will grow to almost 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and more than 11.7 lakh in 2058.

The Kharadi to Khadakwasla route alone will carry 3.23 lakh people in 2028 and could rise to 9.33 lakh passengers in 2058. The small spur line from Nal Stop to Warje and Manik Baug may start with 85,555 passengers and grow to 2.41 lakh riders. The release explained, “These projections highlight the significant growth in ridership expected on Line 4 and 4A over the coming decades.”
Maha-Metro, short for Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited, will handle the full job of building the new lines. This includes civil work, electrical systems, mechanical work, and other related tasks. Some early steps like land surveys and detailed design work have already started.
A Modern Pune
With this new approval, the Pune Metro network will cross the 100 km mark. This is a major moment for the city as it works to build a modern, smooth, and eco-friendly travel system. The government shared a message explaining the big picture behind this move.
It said, “With Line 4 and 4A, Pune will not just get more metro tracks, it will gain a faster, greener, and more connected future. These corridors are designed to give back hours of commuting time, reduce traffic chaos, and provide citizens with a safe, reliable, and affordable alternative. In the years ahead, they will emerge as the true lifelines of Pune, reshaping urban mobility and redefining the city’s growth story.”
The new metro lines will link busy office spaces like Kharadi IT Park, crowded residential spots like Warje, and even scenic places like the Khadakwasla belt. This wide reach will help people from many different areas travel easily without getting stuck in long traffic jams.
