Grenada Independence Day History

Indigenous South American peoples inhabited Grenada before the arrival of Europeans in the Americas. Christopher Columbus observed the island of Grenada in 1498 while on his third voyage to the Americas. Grenada has been subject to multiple European occupations ever since the 16th century when colonization of the New World commenced. As a result of its abundant sugar production, the island became one of the most prosperous colonies when France seized complete control of it in 1649. In 1763, in the wake of the French defeat in the Seven Years’ War, Grenada was ceded to Great Britain via the Treaty of Paris. Grenada remained a British colony for more than two centuries after suppressing a brief uprising by pro-French factions.

In the 1950s, independence movements emerged, and Grenada subsequently became an associated state in March 1967. This social standing enabled them to attain complete independence in managing the internal affairs of the nation. Grenada achieved its independence from the United Kingdom on February 7, 1974, following which Eric Gairy assumed the nation’s inaugural prime ministerial position.

The recently emancipated nation acceded to the Commonwealth, while Queen Elizabeth retained her position as head of state. In March 1979, the New Jewel Movement, which adhered to Marxist-Leninist principles, executed a bloodless coup d’état to overthrow the government of Eric Gairy. The People’s Revolutionary Government was thus constituted. Prime Minister Maurice Bishop presided over the newly constituted government. Bishop was subsequently apprehended and put to death at the hands of People’s Revolutionary Army members, an action that precipitated an October 1983 American invasion. Political stability and a return to electoral democracy have characterized Grenada since that time.
