DTC contractual workers claim massive retrenchment post strike

New Delhi: Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) contractual workers claim that they are facing a massive retrenchment drive by the management against the strike called on October 30. Agitating workers are sitting on a protest demonstration for the last 20 days at Indraprastha depot, DTC headquarter.

“Around 1000 to 1500 hundreds of workers have been thrown out of the job and rest others are waiting for their turn, just because we called for a strike against the government and management dictatorial policy. This government came to power in Delhi by doing protest and now sacking us for choosing the same path for our genuine demands,” said the vice president of the contractual DTC workers association.

Delhi Transport Corporation contractual workers submitted a memorandum on November 8, seeking permission for euthanasia to the President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.

DTC contractual workers have been demanding for ‘Same Pay for Same Work’ and regularisation of their jobs and called for a strike on October 30; now claimed that they are facing a mass retrenchment by the DTC management.

Vijay is a conductor with DTC Shadipur depot, and working as contractual workers said that he was unavailable to join the duty on strike day and was served with a show cause notice and later terminated from his job.

He said, “I have submitted my medical certificate in reply to the show cause notice and they still fired me from my job, I am looking for a legal option against the management.”

Sunder Bidhuri a DTC driver said, “We are jobless and hopeless. There is no one listening, our Chief Minister is not worried and the management is behaving like ‘Hitler’. What options we have but to commit suicide. That’s why we are finally asking our honorary president for giving us permission to commit suicide.”

A DTC official in the name of anonymity told Newsd that around 12 leaders of these contractual workers who led the protest in the month of February won’t be recruited back at any cost and the recent termination is the follow up of the ESMA imposed by the government on October 30.

Deva a DTC conductor told Newsd that this is a ‘Not going back’ moment and we are left with no options.

He said, “We are doing peaceful protest and have been trying to reach out to the concerned officials in a legal and peaceful manner. Protest is our right and the entire crackdown is happening because we have tried to reach out to the Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot at his residence. Unfortunately, there was a birthday celebration at his residence and our presence interrupted their joyous celebration. Such massive crackdown is the result of that protest which caused embarrassment and discomfort to the minister. He is taking it as a prestige issue.”

Some of the disgruntled retrenched DTC workers are working over ten to fifteen years and complained that now they are unable to find a new job.

However, DTC services continued in the state and the new staff members are temporarily inducted by the management to run the service smoothly.

Newsd tried to get the response of Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot and he was unavailable to reach out for comment and the Chief Secretary office also couldn’t respond.
