How to request an extension from the IRS to submit your tax return
Taxpayers who need additional time to complete their tax returns may apply for an extension until October 15 in order to prevent penalties associated with late filing.
Before April 15, this extension may be requested via the IRS Free File tool or by submitting Form 4868. In areas declared federal disaster zones, automatic extensions are also granted by the IRS. By jurisdiction, you can determine who has the automatic extension through their website.

If an extension is granted, it merely extends the deadline for submitting the tax return. An extension is not granted for the repayment of tax liabilities owed by filers.
Tax payments are due no later than April 15th. Tr taxpayers are subject to fines, penalties, and interest if they fail to comply.
While it is advisable to promptly submit the return and remit taxes, the consequences of failing to file the return are significantly more severe than those of non-payment; therefore, timely filing is crucial.
