Students in the state-funded schools of Gujarat 2019 onwards will be required to respond attendance roll calls with Jai Hind or Jai Bharat instead of the usual ‘present sir’ or ‘yes sir’, according to a notice issued on Monday.

According to the notification issued by the Directorate of Primary Education and Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board in Gujarati, the notice is valid for students of Classes 1 to 12 in the government-run, grant-in-aid as well as the self-financed schools. January 1 onwards the students will have to answer their roll call with either saying Jai Hind or Jai Bharat. The notification read that the objective of the exercise is to “foster patriotism among students right from childhood”.

According to the notice, state Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama took the decision in a meeting that took place on Monday, following which the notice was sent for circulation to various education officials.
