Diwali, the five-day Hindu festival starting with Dhanteras, followed by Chhoti Diwali, Badi Diwali, Goverdhan and concluding with Bhaidooj, is celebrated with much pomp and glory across India. The nation will celebrate the festival of lights on October 27, 2019.
The word Diwali is taken from the Sanskrit word Deepavali which signifies rows of lighted lamps. This auspicious day signifies good over evil, light over dark, and knowledge over ignorance.
Diwali is celebrated in honor of Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya after an exile of fourteen years. According to the Hindu Mythology, after Ravana kidnapped Sita, Lord Ram headed to Sri Lanka to rescue the Goddess. Eighteen days after defeating Ravana, Lord Ram, Sita, Laxmana returned to Ayodhya and that day is celebrated as Diwali.
