Diwali Traditions
One of the most important traditions during Diwali is the lighting of diyas (lamps), which is said to help guide Rama back to his kingdom after he defeated Ravana. Families also decorate their homes with rangoli (colorful patterns), and give each other gifts. Fireworks are also set off to celebrate Diwali.
Another important tradition during Diwali is puja, or worship. Hindus believe that Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, will bestow her blessings upon those who pray to her during this time. As such, many families perform puja on Diwali night in order to ensure a prosperous year ahead.
