HDFC Bank can now issue new credit cards; shares rise, HDFC Credit Card Changes

HDFC Credit Card Changes: HDFC Bank is all set to change a few important rules for its credit card users starting July 1. These changes will affect how customers earn reward points and how much they pay in fees when using their cards for some kinds of payments. People who often use their HDFC credit cards for paying rent, loading digital wallets, online gaming, or utility bills need to know what’s coming, or they might be surprised by their next bill.

The bank has clearly said that a 1% charge will apply if a customer spends more than ₹10,000 in a month on online skill-based gaming apps like Dream11, Rummy Culture, MPL, and Junglee Games. Even if someone crosses this ₹10,000 limit, they won’t earn any reward points for such payments. But there is a limit the most you can be charged for this in one month is ₹4,999.

The same kind of rule will also apply to adding money to wallets like PayTM, Mobikwik, Freecharge, or Ola Money. If someone loads more than ₹10,000 in a month into these wallets using their HDFC credit card, they will also have to pay 1% extra. Again, the most they can be charged in a month for this is ₹4,999.

HDFC Credit Card Changes: Rent, Education and Fuel Payments

HDFC has decided that if you pay your electricity or water bills using their credit card, and your total card spending for the month crosses ₹50,000 on personal cards or ₹75,000 on business cards, a 1% charge will be added to your utility bill payments too. That charge is also capped at ₹4,999 per month. But insurance payments will not be affected by this rule.

The bank has also made changes for people paying rent, fuel, or education fees. The 1% fee on rent payments will stay, but again, no one will pay more than ₹4,999 per month in such fees.

For fuel transactions, the charge will only apply if the payment is above ₹15,000 or ₹30,000, depending on what card you use. In case of education-related payments, the extra fee will only be charged if the payment is done through a third-party app, and not if the school or college is paid directly on their website or card machine.

New Reward Point Limits

When it comes to insurance, HDFC is not stopping reward points altogether, but there will now be limits. People using premium cards like Infinia or Infinia Metal can earn points only up to ₹10,000 per month. Those using Diners Black, Metal, or Biz Black Metal can earn up to ₹5,000 worth of points monthly.

All other cards will have a monthly limit of ₹2,000. Some cards like Marriott Bonvoy will still let users earn unlimited points on insurance payments. Entry-level cards like Millennia, Swiggy, and BIZ First will keep their current reward rules without any new cap.
