The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has reported a notable increase in both earnings and passenger numbers for the 2025-26 fiscal year, as per official statements made Thursday.

The historic railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, saw earnings climb to Rs 24.6 crore, up from 2024-25’s Rs 21.2 crore.

Passenger footfall also experienced a boost, rising from 1.74 lakh in 2024-25 to 2.08 lakh in 2025-26. Officials attribute this success to a strategic focus on delivering premium tourism experiences, cementing the region’s status as a premier travel destination.

Efforts are underway to restore 15 additional heritage coaches, enhancing the historical allure for tourists. The railway’s expansion has spurred employment and economic opportunities, benefiting local communities and promoting sustainable growth, with a commitment to merge heritage values with modern excellence.
