Darbhanga: A nine-day-old newborn baby died from rat bite in the ICU of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) said, family. The infant was admitted on Monday for treatment in the NICU. However, the hospital authorities have refuted the claim of the family.

The attendants have accused the hospital management and the duty doctors for negligence. The mother of the infant said, “When I reached around 4 am in the morning to see my kid, I was shocked to see that rats have bitten him and he couldn’t survive.”

DMCH is one of the major hospitals run by the government in Bihar Darbhanga district and this latest incident reflects its poor condition.

The newborn child was admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on Monday said the Mother.

Newborn father Phuran said, “There was no one on duty at the wee hours and we immediately informed the hospital’s authority but they told us that the child was already dead.”

Head of the Child Department KN Mishra denied of such claims of rat bites by the family.

Mishra said, “The child was admitted in the NICU in critical condition but there were no signs of rat bites on his body.”

The newborn parents are resident of adjoining district Madhubani and had brought the child for treatment to DMCH.

A formal complaint is lodged with the district magistrate of Darbhanga Kari Prasad Mahto by the deceased parents. Mahto has assured them and ordered for an investigation into the allegation.
