For a new or replacement Capital One card, the current Capital One activation process can be completed through its website or mobile app. You will normally need the card and its 3-digit security code from the back.
Activate Your Capital One Card Online
- Sign in to your Capital One online account. If you do not have one, create an account through the Capital One website or mobile app.
- After signing in, look for the card activation option.
- If your new card is not linked to your account, connect it to your Capital One username first.
- Follow the instructions shown on the screen.
- Enter the 3-digit security code found on the back of your card when asked.
- On the Capital One website, select “I Want to…” and then choose “Activate Card” under Account Settings.
Activate it Using the Capital One App
The Capital One mobile app is another simple way to turn on a new card. Sign in and open your profile. Then go to Account & Feature Settings and select “Activate a Credit Card.”
The app will guide you through the remaining steps. Keep your physical card nearby because you may need the security code on the back. After the activation is completed, the card can be used according to the account terms.
Phone Activation and Customer Support
Capital One also allows customers to activate a new or replacement card by phone. The company advises calling the number printed on the sticker or other information attached to the card and following the automated instructions. This is safer than relying on an old number found on an unrelated website.

After activation
It is a good idea to sign the card if required and check your account for any unfamiliar transactions. If the card is a replacement, update the card details for subscriptions and other recurring payments because not every merchant updates the information automatically.
