In 2024, tax season begins on Jan. 29, so you should get started on your taxes now. Even though it’s just over three months until the tax day deadline for 2023, it might be a good idea to get started on your taxes as soon as possible. An IRS account online can make the filing process easier and faster.
It takes some time to register with the IRS online, but it is well worth it. Once you’ve accessed the IRS system, you can get the information you need to file electronically this year — like your adjusted gross income, or AGI, from last year’s taxes — as well as full transcripts from previous tax years.
Find out why you should create an IRS account online and how the registration process works. For more tax information, check out what you need to know for 2024’s tax season.

Is it worth creating an IRS online account?
Registering with the IRS gives you access to a wide range of tax information, including:
-
Your adjusted gross income
-
Details of your latest tax return
-
Payment history for the past five years
-
Amount of taxes currently owed
-
Digital versions of some IRS notices
-
Tax professional authorizations
The IRS online account offers you the ability to view your personal tax information, make payments online, and go paperless for certain IRS notices.
Tax records, such as transcripts of past tax returns, income statements, and wage and tax statements, can be obtained instantly. Your tax records can also be protected with an Identity Protection PIN.
It is better to have an IRS online account already created than to have to register online in the middle of a tax difficulty. Tax experts recommend creating an IRS online account just in case you run into a tax issue or problem in the future.

Can I make an online IRS account for my business?
The IRS has enabled business accounts via its online portal. The only way to access a business tax account is as a sole proprietor with an employer identification number — or EIN — or as a partner or shareholder with a Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number and a schedule K-1 for the 2019-2022 tax year. In the present, partners and shareholders are only able to access a business tax account during the years in which they have a schedule K-1. According to the IRS website, support for “more business types and roles” will be added in the near future.
Depending on your role in the business and the type of business you run, you may be able to do different things with your business tax account.
