Three years after Reliance Industries Limited Chairman Mukesh Ambani was accorded a “Z” category security cover, the government has now granted a “Y” category security cover of armed CRPF commandos to his businesswoman/philanthropist wife Nita Ambani.
Officials confirmed that she has been provided with a full ‘Y’ cover of about 10 armed men to travel with her every time she moves. The decision has been taken after a threat assessment report prepared by the central security agencies was approved by the Union Home Ministry.
With this move, the couple has become first two such business tycoons – private persons in the country to get government security of this level. Drawing flak from a lot of quarters, this decision by the government to provide security cover was earlier restricted to journalists, activists and private persons. This move has raised questions over the government’s decision to protect the richest man in India who is perfectly capable of protecting himself and has a dedicated security team with him.
The security cover will be fully paid for, like in the case of her husband. A team of about 10 CRPF commandos with an escort vehicle will secure her. She is expected to pay for them and provide barracks also. The rationale behind the step as presented by the government was, Mukesh Ambani is under ‘potential’ threat and private security guards cannot perform the task of securing him as they are not allowed to carry weapons of higher calibre and sophistication. Already under the Z category, he has a pilot and escort vehicle with commandos armed with sophisticated weapons who give him proximate security every time he moves in Mumbai, where he is based, or any other part of country.
