Moses Abraham, a PhD research scholar from Hyderabad University attempted suicide on Friday by slitting his wrist allegedly unable to bear humiliation by a faculty.

The student slit his wrist with a blade on Friday evening at around 5 pm in the guide’s lab. The student was taken to hospital at around 5:30 pm, Times of India reported.

The condition of the student is stable.

Moses Abraham, a native of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, is pursuing PhD at Advanced Centre for Research of High Materials.

Students alleged that the guide, Prof G Vaitheeswaran, did not allow Moses from attending seminars and asked him to change his research area and supervisor even after the scholar published two research papers in reputed journals, The New Indian Express reported.

No case has been registered by the police.

Over the last decade, nine students committed suicide in Hyderabad University. Most of the students hailed from marginalized sections of society. Education experts pointed out the caste-based discrimination and poor student redressal system as the reason for the increased number of suicide tendencies.
