The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday announced that students who qualify for the Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), or Cost and Works Accountant (ICWA) exams will be treated equivalent to postgraduate degree holders.
The decision has been made at the request of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). The announcement was made on the official Twitter handle of ICAI.
“The University Grants Commission @ugc_india has resolved that CA Qualification will be treated equivalent to PG Degree based on requests submitted from @theicai. This will not only help CA’s for pursuing higher studies but will also facilitate the mobility of Indian CAs globally,” the institute tweeted.

CA, CS or ICWA qualified persons can also now apply for UGC-NET, Ph.D. programmes in all Indian universities and the award of Junior Research Fellowship/ Assistant Professor.
CCM of ICAI Dhiraj Khandelwal tweeted, “Based on the representation made by ICAI, UGC approved CA/CS/ ICWA qualification equivalent to post-graduation degree. (PDG) . Wow. It’s a great recognition to our profession.”
Broadly speaking, a chartered accountant is a professional who manages financial accounts, budgeting, auditing, business strategy and taxation. As a CA, you can be hired by a company as a tax accountant, auditor, financial or management accountant or a budget analyst. However, you can also work with a Chartered Accountancy firm or run your own consultancy providing financial advice to businesses or individuals.
