ICC’s New Powerplay Rule: The ICC has brought a big change in how Powerplay overs will work in T20 matches that get shortened because of rain or other delays. This new rule will start in July 2025. The main idea behind this change is to make shortened games more fair and balanced for both teams. Before this, the Powerplay overs in shorter matches were not very clear and followed fixed patterns. Now that will change.
From now on, if a match gets reduced from 20 overs to something shorter, the Powerplay will also reduce in the same way. It will be worked out based on how many overs each team gets. So instead of giving a random or fixed Powerplay, it will follow a 30% rule, reported Deccan Herald.

That means, in an 8 over innings, the Powerplay will be 2.2 overs. In a match with only 5 overs per side, the Powerplay will be 1.3 overs. This change also means Powerplays can now start or even finish in the middle of an over, which wasn’t the case earlier. During this time, only two fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle, just like in a normal full Powerplay.
If the game is played in full with 20 overs for each team, then the usual 6-over Powerplay will still be used. But for shorter matches, this new method will be followed. It helps both teams because fielding restrictions will now apply in a fair and equal way, no matter how long the match is. It stops one team from having more advantage than the other just because of unclear Powerplay rules.

The ICC Cricket Committee, which includes top players, coaches, and match officials both current and former has approved this change. The new rule will be used in all international T20 games. It is also likely that many domestic T20 leagues will follow this rule in their matches too.
