With a total 241 million active users, compared to 240 million in the US, India has overtaken the latter to become Facebook’s largest country audience. The development comes just a few days after Facebook announced that it has over two billion monthly users around the world.
The figure shows that active users in India were rising more than twice as fast as in the US. “Active users in India are up 27% in the past six months alone, compared to growth of 12% in the US over the same period,” a report in The Next Web said.
What was bewildering is that regardless of being the platform’s largest nation audience, the social media penetration in India remained short. Just 19% of its total population used Facebook in June in India.
The figure also shows the Facebook’s gender imbalance in India. Notably, men still represent three-quarters of the active Facebook profiles. On the contrary, in the US, 54% of the platform’s active users were women. Over half of India’s Facebook users were below the age of 25.
