India vs New Zealand: Indian players wear mothers’ name on their jersey

The final ODI between India – New Zealand, of the five match series, is one that has the country on its toes. With the series tied at 2-all, both teams would be giving it their all. The Indian team though would be seen sporting a different style of jerseys when they take on New Zealand in Visakhapatnam.

Instead of the usual customary practice of wearing their last names on the back of the shirt, the team would wear the names of their mothers as a tribute. The change in jersey names is only for this one match, which captain MS Dhoni spoke about during the toss, “We are quite used to having the surnames from the Dad’s side, and what’s important is to appreciate the stuff that Mothers have done for us. It’s a very emotional connect and it’s good that it is put on a public platform. I would like to request the whole of India keeps this in mind every day and appreciate them every day.”

Earlier this month, Newsd had reported that Star India, sponsor of the Indian cricket team, has launched a TV campaign called ‘Nayi Soch’ for which they have signed cricketers MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to portray the importance of mothers in life. The ad shows the three cricketers proudly wearing their mothers’ names on their jerseys rather than their own names or father’s surnames.
