Indian Railways: Solar panels on platforms to save Rs 1.25 crore annually

The Indian Railways in Ratlam has decided to install solar panels atop platforms of six railway stations in the division of the Western Railways. The stations include Indore, Ujjain, Nagda, Chittorgarh, Mhow, and Ratlam.

The Railways has come up with a plan to generate 43.30 lakh units of electricity every year from these plants, with a total capacity of three MW to save electricity and lessen the dependency on the electric power supply.

“The solar power plants will help the Railways save around 1.23 crore,” said RN Sunkar, DRM.

There are 119 railway stations in the division and the total annual power consumption of the division is 1 crore units. The Railways pay Rs 7.5 crore annually to the power company as charges. The use of solar power will curtail Carbon dioxide emissions by 2,750 tons annually, thus contributing to environmental protection.
