A teenager in Indonesia has tied the knot with a woman in her 70s. The marriage, which was in breach of custom as well as the law both, came to light when a video of the wedding surfaced on internet. Though the 16-year-old groom was technically underage, village officials allowed marriage as the pair threatened to commit suicide.
As per Indonesian law, women must be at least 16 and men at least 19 to get hitched. As per local media, the two developed feelings when the woman was taking care of him while he was suffering from Malaria.
Cik Ani, chief of their village told the AFP news agency that “since the boy is underage, we have decided to carry out the marriage privately”. He also clarified that the wedding was to “avoid the sin of adultery” between the boy and his spouse.
While the boy’s father died years ago, his mother remarried. This is third time that the woman is getting hitched.
