Do you realise that the first debating societies emerged in ancient Greece and India over 4,000 years ago? In Greece, they were known as the Athenian democracy, while in India they were referred to as Shasthartha. The Age of Enlightenment began in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was an intellectual movement that spawned new perspectives on happiness and the pursuit of happiness.
In 1683 and 1770, Trinity College Dublin established two debating societies, The Phil and The Hill, respectively. In Britain, the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies were founded in 1795, and the St. Andrews Debating Society was founded in 1794.
Schools and educational institutions have always emphasised the significance of training the younger generation to communicate effectively.
