International Day to Combat Islamophobia 2024: A resolution passed by the U.N. General Assembly with a unanimous vote in 2022 officially designated March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia. Pakistan provided the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s representative in the resolution’s preamble. It is in commemoration of the day in 2019 when a gunman entered two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, resulting in the deaths of 51 individuals and the injuries of 40 others.

In a formal introduction, Pakistan’s United Nations representative, Munir Akram, presented the resolution. He stated that this resolution recognizes the pervasive increase in prejudice, intolerance, and violence against members of various religious and non-religious communities, irrespective of the perpetrators.

International Day to Combat Islamophobia History

Islamophobia refers to the animosity, fear, or bias against Islam or Muslims as a collective, particularly when Islam is viewed as a geopolitical power or a terrorist organization. There is ongoing debate regarding the exact definition and extent of the term ‘Islamophobia’. Certain academics consider it an instance of xenophobia or prejudice. Others maintain that Islamophobia and racism have no connection whatsoever because religion is not a race, whereas others consider the two to be closely related or at least partially overlapping.

Currently, Islamophobia has emerged as a new form of racism, manifested through xenophobia, negative profiling, and stereotyping of Muslims; this development is especially alarming. Furthermore, Akram notes that the prevalence of Islamophobia is increasingly pronounced about gender. Attainment is directed at women and females on account of the attire they display. The prevailing belief is that Muslim women are subject to oppression and, as such, demand their liberation.

As per the ambassador of Guyana to the United Nations General Assembly, the proclamation of a global day is an essential measure in the fight against Islamophobia and its adverse consequences, such as limited opportunities for employment, accommodation, and education. Global cooperation will aid in the struggle against the escalating acts of violence against Muslims and Muslim communities. The resolution of the United Nations posits that terrorism ought not to be linked with any particular religion, nation, ethnic community, or civilization.

It demands that global dialogue on the promotion of a culture of peace and tolerance be prompted at all levels of society with greater intention. The resolution requests that international and regional organizations, in addition to nations, United Nations bodies, civil society, the private sector, and faith-based organizations, coordinate and provide support for various high-profile events that seek to raise awareness about combating Islamophobia at all levels.
