International Donor Conception Awareness Day 2023: Date, History, Activities and Facts

International Donor Conception Awareness Day 2023: International Donor Conception Awareness Day is observed on April 27 to bring attention to families formed in various ways due to medical infertility, genetic abnormalities, childhood or adolescent illness, and other factors. It is observed in an effort to eliminate the stigma and concealment surrounding egg and sperm donation and conception. In addition, it helps raise awareness of the difficulties and dilemmas associated with assisted reproductive technology, as well as the expected tensions between positive and negative emotions that can arise during this voyage.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL DONOR CONCEPTION AWARENESS DAY

The donation of sperm, ova, or embryos from two or more individuals or a couple results in the conception of a donor child. The biological parent(s) who “donated” sperm or ova are not legally recognised as the child’s parents and are not listed on the birth certificate. In a number of nations, donor-conceived individuals are not informed of their donors’ identities. In spite of this, anonymous sperm and/or egg donation has been made illegal in several countries out of concern for the medical and emotional requirements of donor-conceived individuals.

The origins of donor conception date back to 1322. The Arabic people were the first to successfully use artificial insemination, which was referred to as A.I. at the time, on mares. In 1574, Henry IV, nicknamed “The Impotent,” allegedly attempted to artificially inseminate a woman for the first time. In 1799, Dr. John Hunter, an English physician, was the first to attempt artificial insemination on a human. Dr. Hunter demonstrated the viability of artificial insemination in humans.

In 1866, Dr. J. Marion Sims of North Carolina performed 55 inseminations with varying degrees of success, and the practise spread throughout the United States. Dr. William Pancoast of Philadelphia’s Jefferson Medical College executed the first known artificial insemination or donor conception in a medical facility around 1884. The fact that the sperm originated from a donor was not disclosed to the inseminated patients.
