• Acknowledge their pain. Let them know that you are there for them and that you understand how much they are hurting. Avoid saying things like “I know how you feel” or “It’s all going to be okay.” These platitudes can unintentionally invalidate the person’s experience and make them feel worse.

• Encourage them to express their feelings.
