Those who have already created an Apple Developer account can update to iOS 17 Beta 2 by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update > iOS 17 Developer Beta. Previously, Apple required developers to pay $99 per month for a developer account and beta testing. Visit the Apple Developer page and sign up for a free account to test the most recent beta version.

Now that that is out of the way, we can examine the new features. Apple demonstrated the NameDrop feature at WWDS 2023, which necessitated bringing two iPhones together in order to automatically share contact information. It was also compatible with other AirDrop features, such as SharePlay and file sharing. The function was unavailable in the beta 1 update released earlier this month, but it is now accessible in beta 2.

Apple has also altered the appearance of the update page to include more information about beta updates as well as a link to sign up. Additionally, a new Tips feature appears based on the functionality that is available. For instance, users will be reminded to hold the iPhone closer to the other device if they don’t see anyone nearby when using AirDrop, to use Siri instead of typing a message, etc.

Apple has added a MicroLocation option to Settings’ Location Settings. When enabled, it provides more detailed location data for applications and location sharing. In connection with this, the Check In option in messages now provides Full and Limited data options as opposed to Current Location only and All locations visited.

iOS 17 Beta 2 also adds the ability to disable notifications in StandBy mode, the clever display that appears when the iPhone is charging horizontally. Users can disable StandBy notifications, which will only display critical alerts. Apple has resolved an issue that caused the Settings app to malfunction when activating Crossfade in the Apple Music app. Users of iOS 17 Beta 2 can now activate Crossfade and determine its duration. In iOS 17 Beta 2, Apple has added widgets of various sizes for Apple Music.
