IPL 2027 Auction Returns To India: The Indian Premier League is set to bring its player auction back to India for the first time in three years. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that Goa will host the auction for the 20th edition of the league in December.
The exact date is still being worked out. December 15 and 16 are the likely dates being discussed. Since it will be a mini-auction, the event is expected to be held over just one day.
“We have finalised Goa. The likely dates are December 15 to 16,” said Dhumal as quoted by PTI.
IPL Auction Returns To India After Three Overseas Editions
The upcoming IPL 2027 auction will mark a return to Indian soil after the last three auctions were held outside the country. The 2024 auction was organised in Dubai. The 2025 mega auction was then held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, while Abu Dhabi hosted the 2026 mini-auction. The BCCI has now decided to hold the next mini-auction in Goa.

Dhumal had earlier explained that bringing the auction back to India was a conscious decision by the BCCI. The last auction held in India before the overseas run was the 2023 auction in Kochi, which took place ahead of the 2023 IPL season.
Goa is not a completely new place for the IPL auction. The city had earlier hosted the 2009 auction, making the 2027 event a return to a familiar venue.
BCCI Reopens Debate Over Impact Player Rule
While preparations for the next auction are underway, the BCCI is also taking another look at the Impact Player rule.
The rule was introduced in IPL 2023. It allows a team to replace one player with another during a match. This gives teams more options because they can bring in a specialist batter or bowler based on the situation.
The rule has faced criticism from several well-known players. Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel have all raised concerns about it. One major concern is that the rule can reduce the role of all-rounders because teams don’t always need to depend on players who can both bat and bowl. Rohit Sharma has also spoken about how the rule could affect the development of all-rounders.

The debate became stronger during the IPL 2026 season. A majority of captains reportedly expressed reservations about the rule during their meeting with the BCCI. The board later asked all 10 franchises to send their feedback as part of its post-season review.
The Impact Player rule is currently expected to remain until at least the 2027 season. The final decision on any change will come after the BCCI considers the feedback from the franchises and other stakeholders. Dhumal had earlier said the board would take feedback before making a decision.
“The matter is under discussion. Will take feedback from all the stakeholders and then take a call on this,” he had said.
