IRCTC Ticket Booking: Indian Railways is changing the rules for online ticket booking. From October 1, 2025, anyone who wants to book reserved train tickets online must have their Aadhaar linked to their IRCTC account. Before, this rule applied only to Tatkal tickets, but now it will also apply to general reservation tickets. For the first 15 minutes after the booking window opens, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be able to book tickets online.
After this window, all registered users can continue booking as normal. The government says this will stop ticket touts and make sure real passengers get their tickets.
ITR Due Date Extension 2025: What Taxpayers Need to Know About Penalties and Grace Period
The ministry explained, “With a view to ensure that the benefits of the reservation system reach the common end user and are not misused by unscrupulous elements, it has been decided that with effect from 1.10.2025, during the first 15 minutes of opening of general reservation, reserved general tickets can be booked through the website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)/its app only by Aadhaar authenticated users.”
How the Rule Works?
Only passengers with Aadhaar-linked accounts can book tickets online during the first 15 minutes of opening. This does not affect bookings at PRS counters, where physical tickets will continue as before.
Authorized ticket agents still cannot book tickets in the first 10 minutes for Tatkal or general reservations, as the earlier restriction remains. This rule targets the early high-demand period, when popular trains often sell out quickly, making it fairer for genuine passengers.
How to Link Aadhaar to IRCTC Account
Passengers must link their Aadhaar before October 1, 2025. The steps are simple:
Log in to your IRCTC account.
Go to the ‘My Profile’ section.
Click on ‘Aadhaar Authentication’.
Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
Complete verification using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
Passengers should make sure their account details match their Aadhaar information to avoid verification problems.

What This Means for Travelers
This new system will help passengers get tickets quickly without facing touts or system delays. By linking Aadhaar, travelers can book immediately when the window opens and avoid disappointment. Indian Railways believes this step will make online bookings safer, fairer, and more transparent for everyone.
