Activist, Irom Sharmila married her long-time partner, British citizen Desmond Coutinha on Thursday in Tamil Nadu’s Kodaikanal in presence of selected friends. No family members of bride or the groom were present when the couple signed the official documents at the registrar’s office.
The couple was in Kodaikanal for the past two months to complete legal necessities. Sharmila was escorted by documentary filmmaker and CPI-ML activist, Divya Bharathi.
The 45-year-old activist ended a 16-year-long fast in 2016. She contested the assembly polls in Manipur this year. However, she ended up with just 90 votes in her first electoral fight against former chief minister, Ibobi Singh.
Eventually, she quit politics and decided to settle down in life by marrying Coutinha. The 55-year-old is an NRI with having roots in Goa.
