He had intended to enrol in a recently developed multidisciplinary curriculum at MIT on technology policy, economics, engineering, and management, but he was forced to drop out due to some pressing obligations at home. He is a founding member of the India School of Business in Hyderabad and a representative on the Asia Society’s International Council in New York. Since 2002, Ramesh has worked as an Affiliated Researcher and Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies in New Delhi.

Career
In 1978, Jairam Ramesh began his professional career with a brief stint at the World Bank. He returned to India in December 1979 and began working as Lovraj Kumar’s assistant at the Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices. From 1983 to 1985, he worked as an Officer on Special Duty in the Advisory Board of Energy. Subsequently, he advised Abid Hussain at the Ministry of Industry and other Central Government economic departments before joining the Planning Commission. He reorganised India’s foreign trade agencies while serving as an Officer on Special Duty in VP Singh’s National Front cabinet in 1990.
He was appointed as the Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao’s Officer on Special Duty in 1991, but was quickly fired and appointed as the Finance Minister Manmohan Singh’s OSD. From 1992 to 1994, Ramesh served as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission’s advisor. From 1993 to 1995, he was a member of a special mission to Jammu and Kashmir. And, from 1996 to 1998, he served as the Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s advisor. Jairam is a founder member of the Hyderabad-based Indian School of Business (ISB) and a representative of the Asia Society in New York on its international council. He has worked as an Affiliated Researcher and Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies in New Delhi since 2002.
