Multiple trustworthy media outlets report that York Cinemas the film’s Canadian distributor issued an official statement which confirmed that Jana Nayagan will not reach theatres until after April ends. The announcement also asked ticket holders to claim refunds for previously booked shows which means that the delay has become an established fact instead of being treated as a possibility. “Kindly contact our theatres to have it arranged at the earliest,” the notice read.

The organization responsible for filmmaking in India needs to complete its certification work before the movie can begin its release process which is why the film faces continuous delays.
The movie was originally scheduled for a Pongal release on January 9 2026 but it could not secure clearance in time. Reports indicate that after a committee member objected to the film the movie was sent to a committee which handles changes. Concerns reportedly included religious sensitivities and the use of armed forces insignia without consultation.
Possible Political Timing Behind the Delay
Industry observers also believe the release may now happen after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, expected around April–May 2026.

Vijay’s film could easily have made ₹150-200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. Parasakthi made ₹55 crore in Tamil Nadu. Since there’s no projected revenue, the Tamil Nadu box office could have lost almost ₹100 crore because of Jana Nayagan’s delay”.
