Janan Luwum served as the Church of Boga-Zaire’s third archbishop, in addition to Burundi and Rwanda. Since 1948, when he converted to Christianity, he has been 19 years old. Six years later, in 1954, he was ordained as a priest; in 1974, he was consecrated archbishop of the Church, a position he ascended to through the years.
After Uganda experienced a military rebellion in 1971, the autocratic leader Idi Amin assumed the presidency. Political embezzlement, human rights violations, and corruption characterized his regime. Approximately 100,000 individuals perished throughout his reign.
Archbishop Luwum was a prominent opposition figure who expressed his disapproval of Amin’s regime in a resolute manner. He exhibited an unwavering commitment to his ministry and motivated others to express their opinions. Prominently advocating for opposition, he audaciously submitted a letter to the president in 1977, expressing discontent with his policies, unjustified murders, and unexplained abductions. Luwum was detained and charged with treason on February 16, 1977, on suspicion of orchestrating a coup. Additionally, two cabinet ministers who backed Luwum’s cause were found guilty. Following a rumored automobile collision, the three were pronounced deceased. It was rumored that the captives attempted to engage the driver in combat. However, upon receiving Luwum’s remains, his family discovered that he had sustained gunshot wounds.
Contrary to expectations, the demise of Archbishop Luwum did not bring an end to the resistance against Amin’s repressive regime. His death ushered in a significant era in the history of Uganda. Presently, a statue of Archbishop Janani Luwum stands at the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey in London, alongside other martyrs of the twentieth century; the Church of England regards him as a hero. A public holiday was first observed on February 16, 2016, to commemorate his passing, as proposed in 2015.
