Jannik Sinner’s Australian Open 2024 Victory: Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev in a five-set match to win the 2024 Australian Open on Sunday in Melbourne.
The 22-year-old got off to a sluggish start in his first major final as Medvedev stormed off the blocks. Medvedev, who had just recovered from a five-set triumph, his third in the past fortnight and second after trailing by two sets (including the semifinal against Alexander Zverev), established an offensive baseline position to force the answer.
A solitary break of Sinner’s serve in the third game was adequate for the Russian to complete the opening set with 16/19 first-serve points in his favor. Medvedev, riding his momentum, held a 5-1 lead prior to Sinner recouping one of his breaks. However, the Italian was unable to thwart his opponent’s two-set lead, bringing his total number of victories in the match to 23.
Sinner held serve from a deuce in the ninth game of a more competitive third set, preventing Medvedev from breaking and initiating his revival. In the sixth game of the fourth set, the Italian evaded a breakpoint and defeated his opponent to force a decider by driving Medvedev further from the baseline.
As he attempted to complete his fourth five-setter of the fortnight, the Russian ran out of energy. Sinner, who had earlier produced 15 winners in the preceding set, achieved 13 more in the fifth. In the eighth game, he overcame his opponent’s resistance and expeditiously served the triumph.
Throughout this journey, Sinner also surpassed several significant milestones. The following are five of them:

Additionally, during the Open Era, the first Italian player to win the Australian Open is the second player to overcome a two-set deficit in the championship match. Rafael Nadal was the first player to accomplish this feat two years ago, also against Medvedev.

Although it was Djokovic’s inaugural major of his career, it was Courier’s second; the American had previously won his inaugural event at Roland Garros in 1991.

Jannik Sinner achieved his inaugural Grand Slam title through arduous means. In addition to being the youngest U23 player in four decades to accomplish this feat, he is the second Australian Open men’s singles champion to overcome a two-set deficit in the championship match.

Borg subsequently won an additional five titles at Roland Garros and the same number of titles at Wimbledon in a row.

Only the third Italian male, and the second in the Open Era, has the 22-year-old raised the Grand Slam singles trophy. Nicola Pietrangeli first accomplished this feat at the Roland Garros (Amateur Era) in 1959, and Adriano Panatta did so at the Claycourt Major seventeen years later.
Sinner has now won 20 of his last 21 matches, with his only setback occurring in the 2023 ATP Finals final against Novak Djokovic, whom he defeated in a four-set semifinal.

Jannik Sinner completed the first four rounds of the Australian Open without suffering a single-set loss.
The streak continued in the quarterfinal against World No. 5 Andrey Rublev, and in the Australian Open semifinal, Sinner became the first player to defeat 10-time champion and World No. 1 Djokovic.
After that, Sinner defeated Medvedev, his third consecutive opponent in the top five, to remain the last man standing at the inaugural Grand Slam of the year. By doing so, the Italian joined Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as the sole players since the inception of rankings in 1973 to triumph over three consecutive top-five opponents and secure a major title.
Federer accomplished the feat at the 2007 US Open (and tied with Andy Roddick, Nikolay Davydenko, and Djokovic x3), whereas Djokovic did so in 2012 at the Australian Open (and tied with David Ferrer x5), Andy Murray x(4), and Rafael Nadal x(2).
