Kunvarji Bavaliya is a five-time MLA in the Gujarat assembly. The BJP is in power in both the states. Though bypolls are being held for only one seat each in Gujarat and Jharkhand, the results can be seen as a reflection of people’s perception about the BJP governments in these states.

The bypoll in Kolebira after Jharkhand party MLA Enos Ekka was convicted for a teacher’s murder. There are five candidates in the fray in the Kolebira Assembly constituency. However, the main contest is between the Congress, BJP and Jharkhand Party.

The BJP has fielded Basant Soreng, while the Congress candidate is Bixel Kongadi. The Jharkhand Party has put up Menon Ekka. The Congress is supported by all the opposition parties except the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

The bypoll results come after the assembly elections results in five states, three of which voted the Congress to power. The polling for Jasdan and Kolebira (ST) assembly constituencies were held on December 20.
