Julian Felipe Day 2024 (Philippines): Julian Felipe Day is observed annually on January 28 in honor of Julián Reyes Felipe, a composer and revolutionary. Present-day Cavite City is Cavite Nuevo, where he was born. His students gave him the honorific “Master” because he was a dedicated music educator and composer. During the First Philippine Republic, he was designated Director of the National Band by President Emilio Aguinaldo. For his primary education, he attended public schools in Binondo, Manila, and Cavite. During his youth, he demonstrated an abundance of musical ability. In addition to mastering the organ and piano, he subsequently assumed the role of organist at St. Peter’s Parish Church. With the opportunity to play the organ, Felipe was able to develop his musical skills.

Julian Felipe Day History

January 28 marks the birth anniversary of Julian R. Felipe, the composer of the national anthem “Lupang Hinirang.” He was born in Cavite City in 1861 to Justo Felipe and Victoria Reyes. Primary and secondary education were both obtained from public institutions in Binondo and Cavite. A young Recollect pastor, recognizing his prodigious musical ability, engaged him for the position of organist at St. Peter’s Parish Church. Aurora, ‘Amorita Danza’ (‘Early Morning Danza’), ‘Cintas y Flores’ (‘Ribbons and Flowers’), ‘Motete al Santisimo’ (‘Motet to the Most Holy’), and ‘Reina de Cavite’ (‘Queen of Cavite’), a hymn dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, were among his magnum opuses. He was awarded membership in the Sta. Cecilia Musical Society and a silver medal for these compositions in 1895. In 1896, he participated in combat with the “Trece Martires” (or “13 Martyrs of Cavite”) against the Spanish conquest.

After retrieving his liberty, he enlisted in the forces of General Emilio Aguinaldo. Aguinaldo appointed him director of the national band upon the formation of the First Philippine Republic and commissioned a new march to be performed during the proclamation of independence. The Marcha de Nacional Filipina, originally titled ‘Marcha de Filipina Magdalo,’ was designated as the anthem of the First Philippine Republic. On June 12, 1898, the Banda San Francisco de Malabon, a marching band based in Kawit, Cavite, performed it for the very first time. It was performed during the Philippine Independence Proclamation, when the flag was being raised.

On September 6, 1938, the National Assembly designated Felipe’s composition as the national anthem. The national anthem’s official music since 1898 is a section of “La Marcha Rebelde,” which is a poem by Jose Palma titled “Filipinas,” and the first section of the anthem, “Marcha Real” of Spain.

Based in Manila, Felipe passed away on October 2, 1944. By Republic Act 7805, the Philippines Congress proclaimed January 28 as Julian Felipe Day on September 1, 1994. In recognition of his contributions to Philippine music, the bust of composer Julian Felipe is adorned with flowers on Julian Felipe Day, and the ceremony features remarks, songs, and violin performances.
