The constituency comprises the Kotwa community development block, plus a number of gram panchayats from the Kalyanpur CD Block (for example, Parsauni Wazid, Bakhri, Siswa Shobh, Pakari Dixit, etc.) It is part of the Purvi Champaran Lok Sabha constituency.

In the 2020 Assembly election, there were about 256,790 registered electors.
The turnout was ~62.54%.
There is significant presence of Scheduled Caste (SC) voters (~16.09 %) and Muslim voters (~14.40 %) among the electorate.

Since its creation after the Delimitation in 2008, Kalyanpur has shown unstable or changing party preferences. In the three elections held (2010, 2015, 2020), three different parties have won.
In 2010, JD(U) won with Razia Khatoon.
By 2015, BJP’s Sachindra Prasad Singh won.
In 2020, Manoj Kumar Yadav of RJD took the seat, narrowly defeating the incumbent.

2010: JD(U) won comfortably; the margin over close rivals was sizeable. Elector base ≈ 177,000; valid votes somewhat fewer as turnout was moderate.
