Early Life

Karl Lagerfeld was born on September 10, 1933, in Hamburg, Germany, during one of the most turbulent periods in human history. This chaos and commotion stimulated Lagerfeld’s artistic creativity, which he utilized throughout his successful and prolific career. Otto Lagerfeld, his father, was in the milk industry. Lagerfeld & Co. were importing American reconstituted milk into Germany. A decade prior to Karl’s birth, he established Glucksklee-Milch, also in the milk industry. His mother, Elisabeth Bahlmann, was a descendant of a Catholic Center party politician, Karl Bahlmann; they were married three years prior to Karl’s birth. We are aware that Lagerfeld graduated from the Lycée Montaigne in Paris.

After moving to Paris in 1953, he found his first position in the fashion industry within two years. A design competition landed Lagerfeld his first position with the French fashion house Pierre Balmain. Three years later, Lagerfeld’s career flourished when he was appointed artistic director of the French label Jean Patou. In 1964, he began studying art history and working for Tiziano in Rome. The following year, Fendi hired him to work on its leather collection. Lagerfeld was able to establish himself in the industry as a result of this work and began to collaborate with prominent labels such as Krizia, Jourdan, and others. When Lagerfeld joined Chanel in 1983, the entire fashion industry admired his genius. Due to his refined taste and innovative approach to each design, Chanel rose to the top. From then on, with various brands and his brand named after him, everything was success after success for Lagerfeld. He has collaborated with stars from the entertainment and art realms, such as Madonna and Kylie Minogue, as a fan of popular culture.

On a personal level, Lagerfeld was linked to model Jacques Bascher for decades, although the nature of their relationship is unclear. The German remained with the French model until he expired. In addition, Lagerfeld shared his life with an adorable kitten named Chouppete (French for’sweetheart’) who even has a Twitter account.
