Kerala police beat up transgenders, doctor refuses treatment

Three transgenders were cruelly beaten up by Kerala Police near KSRTC bus stand in Thrissur on Friday evening.

Ragarenjini, Deepthi and Aleena were waiting in the bus stand.  The victims alleged that they were eating food from a restaurant in the bus stand. A police jeep stopped in front of them. The policemen, including driver, came out of the jeep started abusing them and beat them using canes without any provocation.

The three were severely injured in the assault. Ragarenjini had recently undergone a sex reassignment surgery.

The trio went to the Thrissur District hospital for primary treatment. They alleged that a doctor in the hospital refused to treat them and asked them to get out of the hospital.

The victims then contacted LGBTQ activist Sheetal Shyam. Sheetal said that the hospital authorities decided to treat the victim only after much arguments from rights activists.

The attacks against transgenders are increasing in Kerala in recent times.

On Thursday, transgenders were brutally tortured by police inside the station in Calicut. Some of the victims alleged that police even tried to sexually assault them.
