KKR Releases Mustafizur Rahman: In a surprising development just weeks after the IPL 2026 mini-auction, where Mustafizur Rahman was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹9.20 crore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked the franchise to release the Bangladesh fast bowler from their squad. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed this decision, citing “recent developments across the region.” The directive allows KKR to seek a replacement player as needed.

“Due to the recent developments that are going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from their squad,” Saikia said in a chat with news agency ANI. BCCI has also said that if they ask for any replacement, BCCI is going to allow that replacement.”

The controversy surrounding this issue has raised many questions regarding the contracts and it is not surprising that the most important question is: Is Mustafizur still entitled to full payment under the contract even though he did not play in the tournament?
Understanding IPL Contracts and Payment Structure
1. Guaranteed Payments Upon Signing
When a player is selected in the auction and signs a contract, the franchise becomes legally bound to fulfill that agreement under normal conditions. IPL contracts are not “pay-as-you-play” in the purest sense, and as long as the player is available and qualified to take part, the agreed amount usually prevails, even if they do not participate in the matches at all.
2. Pro-Rata and Availability Rules
There are specific situations where payments can be adjusted according to the player’s condition (injury, national duty, etc.) or pro-rata rules for mid-season replacements. For instance, Mustafizur was paid only for the portion of the season he was available, not the full auction value, when he joined Delhi Capitals mid-season previously.

Will Mustafizur Receive His Full Match Fee?
Scenario 1: Normal Contract, and Full Payment
In case the KKR team entirely removes Mustafizur and there are no special clauses resorted to, the team would, in a sense, still be thinking of the idea of technically paying him the amount stipulated in the contract because:
The contracts in IPL are such that they become legal responsibilities immediately after signing and getting approval from BCCI. The players are also liable to receive their monthly remuneration as long as they remain ready for selection. In such a case, even if he doesnt feature in a single game, Mustafizur would be receiving the remuneration as per the contract.
Scenario 2: Release under Force Majeure or BCCI Directive
Several reports imply that the BCCIs decision to let him go might be considered a ‘force majeure’ event, a situation unforeseeable and uncontrollable by either party (KKR or the player). Here, the parties in the contract could renegotiate their obligations, or the franchise could be relieved from paying the full amount and take back the funds already spent in their auction purse.
The NDTV report states that, in such clauses, the franchise can be given a credit of 9.20 crore back into their budget, thus, they are not really obliged to pay Mustafizur the full fee. Nevertheless, there is no official confirmation yet on the board’s manner of implementing this clause or whether Mustafizur will be compensated through another channel.
Scenario 3: Mutual Agreement or Negotiation
In cases of such high profile, where the conflicts of fame and money are involved, the franchise, athlete, and BCCI could resolve their disagreements by conducting a monetary transaction or maybe even reimbursement for a missed chance, however, no one is really required by the law to do so. At this moment, no such negotiation has been acknowledged through any official communique, but due to the complexity of the issue, it is still very probable.
