Who is Harish Salve, top lawyer who charged Re 1 for Kulbhushan Jadhav case

Hours after the Pulwama terror attack, the hearing of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav began in International Court of Justice (ICJ) with India asserting that the trial carried out in Pakistan did not meet minimum standards of natural and human rights, urging court to declare his detention for espionage as unlawful and give an order to release him.

After the Pakistan military court sentenced Kulbhushan Jadhav to a death sentence, due efforts of Harish Salve, lawyer representing Jadhav in the case, that in May, 2017, the International Court of Justice put a provisional stay on the order.

Here are a few things to know about one India’s top lawyers

  • Salve was born to a Christian Marathi family on 22 June 1955. His mother, Ambriti Salve was a doctor, while his father NKP Salve was a chartered accountant and a top Indian National Congress politician. His grandfather PK Salve was a renowned criminal lawyer.
  • Before starting a legal career in 1980 at JB Dadachandji & Co as intern and later as full-time lawyer, Salve was a qualified chartered accountant who practiced accountancy in taxation.
  • At JB Dadachandji and Co he assisted Palkhivala in the Minerva Mills case.
  • In the early 1980s, he worked with former Attorney General, Soli Sorabjee. From 1 November 1999 to 3 November 2002, Harish Salve served as the Solicitor General of India.
  • Salve frequently represents Reliance Industries Limited, Tata Group, ITC Limited. He has also appeared for Ratan Tata.
  • Salve appeared for a Gujarat Riots victim Bilkis Bano and took up Salman Khan’s case. He was also the amicus curiae in the Gujarat Riots case.
  • Harish Salve took a fees of mare Re 1 to fight Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case. When a user said, “Any good India lawyer would have done the same and with much less expenses than #HarishSalve”, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, did not even take an hour to reply by saying, “Not fair. #HarishSalve has charged us Rs.1/- as his fee for this case”.
