Kolkata Godown Fire Tragedy:In the early hours of Monday, a devastating fire erupted at two adjacent godowns in the Najirabad area of Anandapur, located on the outskirts of Kolkata, West Bengal. What began as an ordinary night quickly turned into a nightmare, the blaze spread with terrifying speed through the structures, trapping workers who were asleep inside.

The firefighting operation recovered 11 bodies from the wreckage, which proved that the fire destruction prevented any conventional identification methods from working. The forensic team now uses DNA analysis which requires them to extract DNA material from bone marrow and teeth because most of the remains became ash through the cremation process.

“Several charred bodies and skeletal remains have been recovered since Monday night, though the fire is still raging in pockets, raising fears that the toll may rise further,” an official said.

The disaster continued to unfold beyond its initial occurrence. Families search for missing persons who became unaccounted after the fire started three days ago, yet they still wait for any news about their missing relatives. The missing people had their final conversations with family members on Sunday night, yet they possessed no knowledge about the disaster that would occur later.

Rescue Operations

Firefighters managed to control most of the fire after three hours of fighting it, but search teams faced difficulties because hot spots remained active throughout the wreckage site. Rescue teams used at least 12 fire tenders to search through the collapsed building, which they hoped would lead them to discover any people who survived the disaster.

“Initial findings show barring a few fire extinguishers in one godown, no safety measure was in place,” said a fire officer. “It is illegal for so many workers to stay inside a godown at night. There was no emergency exit.”

Who Is Responsible?

The building materials contained highly flammable substances, which emergency exits failed to meet required standards so these two elements enabled the fire to spread throughout the building with extreme force. Officials have warned that the casualty figures may rise if more bodies are found during ongoing operations.

The relatives of missing persons experience intense suffering because they have to wait without any news about their loved ones. People who have established informal camps at the destroyed area return to the site every day to collect information from police and rescue operations.

The initial research findings show that both godowns operated without necessary fire safety systems at their facilities which also lacked official fire department authorization. The officials revealed that the facility did not have operational firefighting equipment while emergency exits either did not exist or became unusable because of unauthorized access that resulted in multiple fatalities.

Government Response

The site received official visits from local authorities after the disaster which included the mayor of Kolkata and high-ranking government leaders from the state.

A spokesperson for Wow! Momo told TOI: “We complied with firfire safety protocols, and had 28 fire extinguishers inside. The decorators godown did not have compliance. The fire spread from there”. On Tuesday, Minister Sujit Bose reached the scene at around 11:30 am and inspected the two gutted warehouses and spoke with fire service personnel and officials.

The Trinamool leader also met with the bereaved families. He said, “This place was like a tinderbox. Spread across 35,000 square feet, this area housed a momo manufacturing factory and a decorator’s warehouse side by side. There were a lot of flammable materials inside. Significant damage has been caused. Upon receiving the news, 12 fire engines were dispatched. Senior fire service officials also arrived at the scene.”

The West Bengal government will provide financial support to the families of both deceased individuals and missing persons. The financial support will help families cope with their intense grief.
