Krishna Janmashtami 2026: Krishna Janmashtami is one of the most honored Hindu festivals. In 2026, people across India will get ready for the celebration held at midnight. They mark the birth of Lord Krishna. Krishna is also known as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

For 2026, the main Janmashtami celebration is on Friday, September 4 in much of North India. Some people may mention September 5 instead. This happens because Ashtami Tithi goes beyond midnight. Also, a few Vaishnava groups use their own rules for fasting and festival dates.

Krishna Janmashtami 2026 Date

Janmashtami 2026 will fall on Friday, September 4, 2026.

As per Drik Panchang, Ashtami Tithi starts at 2:25 AM on September 4. It finishes at 12:13 AM on September 5. Rohini Nakshatra starts at 12:29 AM on September 4. It then ends at 11:04 PM on September 4.

The overlap of Ashtami and Rohini matters in the common traditional story of Krishna’s birth. Krishna is said to have appeared on the eighth lunar day. That appearance is linked to Rohini Nakshatra.

Why Are There Different Janmashtami Dates?

Devotees may see September 4 or September 5 mentioned in different calendars. This is largely because Smarta and Vaishnava traditions can use different rules for determining the fasting and festival day.

Therefore, people following a particular temple, sampradaya or family tradition should follow its local Panchang rather than assuming that every calendar will give identical fasting and Parana timings. Recent reports have also noted this distinction for 2026.

For Kolkata, the window is earlier, while Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and other cities have their own local timings. This is why devotees should check the Panchang for their city before beginning the main Puja.

How Lord Krishna Was Born?

In the traditional story, Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. Devaki’s brother was King Kamsa. He had heard a prophecy. He believed Devaki’s eighth child would bring about his own downfall.

So Kamsa held Devaki and Vasudeva in prison. Each time the couple had a child, Kamsa killed it. He did this to stop the prophecy from coming true.

But when Devaki’s eighth child was born, the situation shifted. The Bhagavata Purana describes Krishna appearing to Devaki and Vasudeva in the prison at the auspicious time of his birth. Vasudeva was then able to carry the newborn Krishna out of the prison and take him to Gokula, where he was placed in the care of Nanda Maharaja and Yashoda.

Why is Janmashtami Celebrated at Midnight?

Midnight matters in Janmashtami. People say Krishna was born at Nishita Kaal.

The Bhagavata Purana talks about Krishna coming to the world in the dark hours. It links the birth with Rohini. It also says the surroundings felt calm. There were signs that the divine moment was being welcomed.
