Dr. Gillian Siddall, President and Vice-Chancellor of Lakehead University, said she was happy that the school was back on stage.

“Thank you to our researchers and their partners for an exceptional year,” Dr. Siddall said.

“Kudos must also go to the hard work and dedication of our offices of Research Services and Innovation, Partnerships and Economic Development, which have helped put Lakehead University among the highest-ranked universities in Canada and around the world.”

The annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities by Research Infosource, Canada’s source of research and development intelligence, says that Lakehead is one of the best undergraduate universities in the country. This is because the university scores highly on a balanced scorecard of research inputs and outputs.

Lakehead’s vice-president of research and innovation, Dr. Andrew P. Dean, said he was thrilled to be ranked as one of the top three universities in Canada for first-year students.

“This ranking reflects the impact and importance of the research that is happening at Lakehead University. We continually place among the top universities in the country for citations and research funding. In Northern Ontario, we are the trusted expert for knowledge transfer that leads to innovation and economic development,” Dr. Dean said.

Not-for-Profit study Income is one of the study results that are being tracked. For three years in a row, Lakehead University has been the best in Canada in this area.

“This ranking shows that we are committed to working with many partners across our regions to solve problems like climate change, unequal access to health care, food insecurity, and lack of housing.”

He also said that Lakehead’s new Research Plan, which covers the years 2024–2026, is based on five main goals and shows how the university will grow and what areas are important to the people it serves in the future.

“Lakehead University continues to be a research-intensive university and views research and innovation as an important economic driver for our regions,” Dr. Dean said.

Research Infosource chooses its Research Universities of the Year by looking at a number of factors, such as the total amount of sponsored research funding each university receives, the research intensity per faculty (total research income per faculty member), the research intensity per graduate student (total research income per graduate student), the total number of publications, the intensity of those publications, and the impact of those publications.

“Excellent scholarly research combined with research leadership have put Lakehead among the research leaders in its tier,” said Ron Freedman, CEO of Research Infosource Inc.

“Especially notable is the high level of research income coming from partnerships and collaborations from 2018-2022, which is a strong indicator of research relevance.”
