PM reviews steps taken to reduce under-nutrition (12:14) New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the progress and efforts being made to prevent and reduce under-nutrition and related problems in the country. During a high-level review meeting attended by officials from the Prime Minister's Office, NITI Aayog and other ministries, the current status of malnutrition, stunting and related problems were discussed on Friday, a government statement said on Saturday. The successful nutrition initiatives of some other developing countries also came up for discussion during the meeting. "The Prime Minister stressed on the need to work towards concrete objectives to reduce stunting, under-nutrition, low birth weight, and anaemia. He emphasized that visible and measurable results should be seen by 2022, the 75th anniversary of Independence," it added. Towards this end, real-time monitoring towards progress of nutrition outcomes was discussed, especially in the worst performing districts. "Senior officials repeatedly emphasized that initiatives of the government such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Mission Indradhanush, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana are having a positive impact on nutrition." The Prime Minister called for convergence among all schemes of union and state governments, which directly or indirectly have an impact on nutrition outcomes. He said raising social awareness towards the importance of nutrition was necessary to achieve the desired results. He stressed on the importance of using informal channels to generate this awareness.

Two days after the noted politician and Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi breathed his last, his teenaged son Priyadeep Dasmunshi penned a heartfelt note on his Facebook post.   Priyadeep, who wish to take forward his father’s legacy in politics, displayed shock on how he was told to take his father’s body to different places – from the Congress headquarter in Delhi to the Congress headquarters and high court in Kolkata and finally to his constituency – something that he termed as ‘funeral tour’.

The young son of Dasmunsi also mentioned ‘corrupt’ government and FIFA – the two bodies his father was highly associated with on the Facebook post.

My father was part of the government of India, as well as FIFA – two bodies highly associated with corruption. People often ‘joke’ with me that I must have a lot of black money etc. An absolute myth actually, my father never took a single penny, something I can say with utmost confidence and pride. It was his honesty, aggression, and passion that established his legacy, something I truly witnessed in the funeral tour.

Here’s what he wrote:

Rushing straight to the hospital the moment I landed, I did not know what to expect. The last time I spoke to my father was 9 years ago, when I was 9 years old. Since 9 years, my mom and I fought a constant battle, doing everything we can to bring about his recovery, from medical science to alternative medicine to religious voodoo. It’s not easy, being optimistic on one side while living in constant fear on the other. We had to be strong while also prepare for the worst. But no number of years could prepare us for that moment when the clock struck 12.10. A 9 year old battle was over, my father was at peace.

I could not come to terms with that, and yes I was selfish. Meagre chances of his recovery kept my family surviving for years. Now, what was next? In shock, I was told that we have to take his body to different places, from the congress headquarters in Delhi to the congress headquarters and high court in Kolkata and finally to his constituency, something that I would like to term his ‘funeral tour’. No I did not want that at all. All I wanted was to be with close friends and family and see him off rather than constantly being in front of cameras. I was yet again selfish, and terribly wrong.

The Prime Minister tweeting about his death, highest political leaders of multiple parties coming to pay him their respect, it was all happening too fast and I was puzzled and lost. But what truly opened my eyes and brought some clarity to the situation was how the people reacted. Lakhs of people of different ages and strata showed up, all pushing and shoving each other to see my father. Their outbursts of pain, anger, helplessness showed me how much my father meant to these people, how much he affected their lives. At that moment I realised, that it is these people who are my close friends. It is these people who are my family. I felt a strange relation, a strange connection with all of them. I felt a sense of responsibility towards all of them. They worshipped my father and in this dishonest world I was completely astounded by how a man who happens to be my father gained the respect of and inspired countless people and united all political opposition. His greatest achievement is how he has created a reputation that will keep him immortal. His example is one that truly reinforces that still today, honesty is the best policy and that becoming a politician should not have negative connotations. Today, I promise you dad, that I will take the best care of mom, and will not just continue but develop your legacy to the tallest heights. He lived and breathed for the people, and so will I.

A big thank you to everyone who has been on our side these past few years. I’m forever indebted. A big shoutout to mom who kept all of us together. Watching my mother physically battle people from hijacking my father’s coffin, handling me, handling all loved ones including everybody in the constituency, and keeping her cool all these years, staying strong, truly an awe inspiring sight. I’m blessed to have such amazing parents guiding me through every step of my life.

Rest in peace dad. See you on the other side. And I’ve got the perfect farewell gift for you. You sparked my passion in history at a very early age and I just learnt that I have topped the world in A-level history. Thank you for everything.
